** UPDATE: Will also be doing henna in FARMINGTON HILLS, MI at TAWHEED CENTER (27909 W. 10 Mile Rd, Farmington Hills, MI 48336) on Saturday November 5th from 1pm to 5pm, first come, first serve. ALL PROCEEDS from this day will go to charity, through Helping Hand for Relief and Development. Please come and get your henna on, and support this cause insha'Allah! =)

SO, Eid al Adha is coming up! I've been getting some inquiries for information on my Eid Henna Open House, and yes, I know, I have NOT put out any info out for it, as of yet. It's not because I'm holding a super-secret Open House -- its because this time, EID-AL-ADHA 2011 HENNA IS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. I'm hoping that appointments work out better for YOU -- less time waiting and a lot less crazy! I get very nervous when my assistant comes over and whispers that so-and-so person has been waiting for an hour, or that so-and-so person drove ALL the way from god-knows-where and the line is 2 hours long. :( Really, I hate hearing that. So to avoid that scenario, please make an appointment -- you can do it yourself, ONLINE, with just a couple clicks! ITS REALLY EASYYYY!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (just read it)

How long is each appointment and how much henna do I get in each appt?

Most appointments will be for 20 mins and includes TWO designs. Ideally, ONE appt is for ONE person.

Can I book one appt for 3-4 people?

NO. One appointment is for ONE person, getting TWO designs. Generally, most people want two designs for Eid.
However, if you'd like to get only ONE design, then go ahead and schedule one appointment for two people (each person would get one design).

What if I want more than 2 designs?

If you want FOUR designs [both sides of both hands] then make sure to book 2 appts!

What if I'm running late?

Don't be late. =)
If you are late, unfortunately I will go ahead and start on the next person whose waiting. Once you arrive, I'll try my best to get you out of there asap. But you'll probably have to wait a bit in line.
IDEALLY: Show up 10-15 mins PRIOR to your scheduled time so we can get started right away, or, even get you done BEFORE your scheduled time, in the case of cancellations/no-shows. Remember, 20 mins passes quick!

How much? Prices and designs will be labeled and out for you to choose from when you come to your appt! You can get an idea of prices and designs when you click on the "Book Now!" button. Also, see below:

Two "Standard" Design, above : Example #1 and Example #2 = $10 PER design
(20 min appt for 2 "standard" designs)

Two "Medium" Designs, above : Example #3 and Example #4 = $15 PER design
(20 min appt for 2 "medium" designs)

Two "Large" Designs, above: Example #5 and Example #6 = $20 PER design (30 min appt for 2 "large" designs)

What if I change my mind about what design I want when I'm at my appointment?

That's FINE! You're paying at your appointment, not when your booking!
Please try to be as accurate as possible when booking -- the time slot you book for is the time slot you GET. I will do whatever you'd like in that time slot - standard or medium or large design, granted we can fit it IN the time you've booked for.
The only thing you CAN'T do is book for 2 standard designs (20 mins) and then change to wanting 4 Large designs (30+ mins) -- because 4 large designs will take much longer to do...

What if I don't get all this? This is confusing!

Not so tech-savvy? Scared of that big 'book now' button (or just lazy)? ;) Contact us at hennacraze@gmail.com or 734 945 1890 and we'll book your session for you...but if you wait too long, odds are, the time you want might be gone!

FINAL NOTE:

This booking process is here to help things run smoothly and to cut down the amount of time that you'd have to wait in line. It is NOT fool-proof. Most likely, we'll still be a *little* off schedule and you'll still have to wait a *little* bit, due to cancellations/no-shows/tag-alongs/etc. Sorry!
PLEASE REMEMBER, if you're 15 mins late to your 20 minute appt, do NOT expect us to wait for you. When there's a line, we have to keep things moving. So I can't stress it enough, please be here about 10-15 mins before your appointment. We will not "HOLD" a spot for you. If you book, you need to be HERE to receive the service!

Salaams All,

I hope everyone's Ramadan has been going blissfully well iA (for those who celebrate it. For those who don't...!) :) I didn't officially update this blog with a 'Ramadan Mubarak,' so Ramadan Mubarak... May we all leave this month spiritually awakened!

'Course, the end of Ramadan also means its that time of year [well, for me, at least] where I get lots & lots calls for Eid henna [thank you, all you awesome awesome ppl!]. So, I will be holding my regular "Eid Henna Open House" again this year [see giant flyer above]. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, it will only be on ONE DAY this Eid.

Water Series Photo Shoot with Jennifer Alder+Friends

Hey All,

So, thought I'd update some photos for those of you NOT on facebook -- I recently had the opportunity to henna two stunning and talented models [Lynn Kelsey and Maria Kesto] for another Photography workshop! -- EEEK! I'm always so excited to do anything with Jennifer Alder [the photographer] as she is totally amazing at what she does, and always has such a fantastic team as well! Plus, we get to hang out, chill, talk, and of course HENNA! =) (Btw, Jen, I still owe you a nicer henna design -- and not the wee little butterfly you got last time -- so please feel free to remind me whenever we see each other next!!)

Anywho, the theme for this workshop was 'Water Series' which of course went perfectly with the warm weather we've been lucky enough to have recently! The models were all placed in beautiful, colorful and flowyyyyyy dresses, styled by Anna Goldstone; makeup+hair was done by Jacuqie Pruder, Corinne Michelle, and MAK. Hey All,

So summer henna season is in full swing [yay!] I've been keeping extra busy with lots of bridal henna appts, party sessions [graduations, birthdays and a couple of baby showers too]. And, if you've been keeping up with me on facebook at all, you'll know that I've been going on and on about a place called the Rust Belt Market in Ferndale, MI. This is a market of indie artists and designers, all selling one of a kind hand-made products -- and the mix is VERY eclectic. You can buy anything from fine art prints, to vintage clothing, to (hand made) scarves, jewelry, decoration pieces, soaps, fragrances, candles and much, much more. I've had the privilege of being there for three weekends [since it opened in early May] and have enjoyed it so much! Below are some pics from Rust Belt and some other henna sessions from May!

Hey All!

I recently [alright, its been a month, almost. I'm just really bad with updating this blog regularly...] had the wonderful opportunity to do henna at a photography workshop, held by Jennifer Alder Photography [that name's familiar, right? She's the photographer responsible for some of the best henna shots I've got floating around!]

The workshop was titled, "Urban Arts and Drama" and was a great way for photographers of all skill levels to learn more about the different aspects that go into creating a beautiful image. Jennifer had gathered together a fantastic team of hair and MU artists, wardrobe, stylists and models (and of course, photography students) for the day; it was cold, it was rainy, it was overcast -- but that didn't stop us! We hung out, took photos and had a lot of fun along the way. =) I loved getting to meet/greet with the all the talented peeps on this team and getting to yak on about my henna work! (I even took some photos too -- *ahem* which are no where near as nice as the ones the professionals took, so don't expect to be seeing any here...)

I've been busy mixing and packaging lots of henna the past couple of weeks for the beginning of wedding season -- which I'm assuming begins in April, as that's when it starts to get realllllll busy for most henna artists! I still have some weekends dates left over for April, so if interested, do contact me.

IN ADDITION, I've been getting lots of calls for individual appts, so if you've been thinking of some summer henna, here's the info you need:

INDIVIDUAL henna appts can be scheduled anytime between 12p to 5pm, Monday-Fridays. [Some Thursdays and Fridays may not be available].

Henna Photo Shoot - March 2011

I am PSYCHED, I tell ya', TOTALLY and utterly psychedddd! You know that feeling you get when everything simply...works out [alhamdulillah]? That's about how I feel right now! =)

Today I worked with a super talented team of people on an Indian bridal shoot that we've been planning (and planning) on doing for a while. Jennifer Alder [whom I've worked with before, if you follow this blog or follow me on fb] was our amazing photographer; the makeup artist (who also did a phenomenal job) was Jessica Doggett and our super gorgeous and talented model was Jackie (those of you in the Grand Rapids area will know her as radio personality on 97.9 WGRD; her program is Jackie On Air!).

Everything came together seamlessly, and the photos that I've seen of it so far are absolutely stunning! I couldn't wait to share some with you all here, so below are a few shots!

Bookings for Summer 2011 Henna!

Hey All,

Just a quick note that I am booking for henna events in April, May, June, July, and August 2011 NOW. Please contact me NOW if you'd like to hire me during these months -- summer's are usually a very busy time for henna artists and while I try to schedule everyone I can, I will, most likely, NOT be available if you contact me a week or two weeks before [especially in May/June/July].

Finally, for those looking to have a henna party or have their bridal henna done during the long weekends (Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day weekends) -- this really, really applies to you!

I've recently returned from a month-long vacation in London, UK and thought it was time for an update! Of course, no trip is complete [for me] without some henna-related happenings -- for one, I met Kiran Sahib, an amazing henna artist based in London, whose work has inspired many, many others, including myself! I was SO happy to have met an artist whom I've admired for so long. Kiran was very sweet and invited me to her home for a cup of tea and -- it goes almost without saying -- some henna! =)

Makeup was done by the equally talented Marissa Najor (she applied the jewels on the model's neck/shoulder as well, while I applied the jewels within the henna) -- such a fun collaboration! Lots of updates here, so I'll just go down the list:

UPDATE #1

Oh, and I've recently changed computers (upgraded to a MAC which I'm oh-so-in-love with). Unfortunately, many of my pictures (recent henna ones for example) are still on the old PC, needing desperately to be transferred and saved from complete oblivion, which my PC is slowly but surely trudging towards (sorry dude). I've got some new pics here on the mac, which I'll upload soon.

UPDATE #2

ANDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD, Ramadan Mubarak! For those who don't know, Ramadan is the month in which Muslims 'round the world fast from sunrise to sunset as a sign of their devotion to God (fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars/obligations of a Muslim). Ramadan is also the month of forgiving (and giving), and Muslims believe that God is even more merciful during this time than at any other time of the year, thus, there's extra prayers at night and in general, more worship... All of which conspires to... me having less overall time to work this month!

And, as you may guess, it's generally NOT a good idea to have a ravenously hungry, probably very-low-in-energy, and sleepy, henna artist doing your bridal henna... say around, an hour before sunset. I will be hungry. And tired. And possibly, the lines which would otherwise come out super neat and clean may be sloppy, and dare I say it, non-symmetrical. This would not make you happy, and once I've eaten some food and regained some energy, would have me horrified!

SO, for the dates of August 11 to September 10th 2010, I WILL NOT BE TAKING EVENING BOOKINGS FOR HENNA APPOINTMENTS. Of course, I WILL BE AVAILABLE DURING THE MORNING AND AFTERNOON, just not after 5pm. Dates after September 10th are back as usual.

And FYI brides, if your wedding is during winter break (November/December 2010), please call early to book your dates! Some dates for NEXT SUMMER (2011) are booked, and dates for November and December are running out.

I'll have my appointment book on me and will be ready for bookings right then and there, and if you'd like, a bridal consultation (which is FREE, as always). Of course, don't fret, for I'll be ready to do some henna as well, so you can see exactly what you'd get before you get it! =) And henna boxes (for Eid presents!) will also be available for sale! [which means I should probably get a move on and start making some more already...]

Besides me, there'll be food (well, after sunset lol), designer clothes, decorators, and other wedding services for the South Asian bride. Come check it out!

Btw, the event is being hosted by Crimson Splash Event Planners and EGO North America Designers, the same folks who brought you the sold out and extremely successful Mother's Day fashion show held a couple months back. I'm super excited to be working with such a talented team!

Private Henna Session: Henna'd Arm Sleeve!

I recently did a private henna session for a wonderful client (above)! It was one of the best henna sessions I've had in a loonnng time -- totally relaxed, but full of creative energy (for me, at least). The client had requested something all along her arm and after looking at several designs and choosing bits and peices of each, she told me, "Go for it!" It was a little outside of my own comfort zone but was so totally worth it in the end. In fact, we ended up having some time left over, so I did a medium style design on her leg as well. I haven't updated since Spring Break but have had many, many henna events since then; this past weekend was especially fun: bridal, bridal party, mhendi party, and festival, all in one! I didn't take as many photos as I would have liked, but that's because I was so busy henna-ing, I didn't even get a chance (which I DO like). Hey everyone! Hope your semester and year is coming to a nice close and you've gotten everything done that you wanted to (if not, don't feel bad -- New Year's is right around the corner and what better time to make the resolution of fulfilling things you should have done the year before?) Anywho, for me, I'm looking forward to relaxing with friends and family during this winter break, and of course, catching up on some much needed time between myself and my henna cones. I've got some henna-themed holiday events to attend, and some orders on boxes and frames that need to be done PRONTO (don't worry lovely clients, they're getting done!). Finally, as a self-employed college student, I feel honor bound to give you an extra pitch for this upcoming month. This is because not only am I 1.) Really wanting to do some henna but 2.) am also going to have a lot of free time during the next 3/4 weeks! So, bear with me here and feel free to skip if you've had enough of me already: If your thinking of having a holiday themed event at home or for the office and want to make it an extra festive, special experience for your guests, how about adding some henna to the mix? Common Questions / FYI

Checking my email today, I realized that there were a lot of people out there (including you, desis) who know very little about henna. Some people have this assumption that when you put on henna, it becomes black or dark brown/orange in a matter of minutes (or an hour). If that's the case, then what you're using is either black henna (which is illegal in many places all over the world and has a high chance of leaving a permanent, pimply scar on your body) or 'emergency' henna (which has colors/chemicals put in it to make the henna turn dark brown minutes after you place it on your hands. It also has a tendency to make your hands and fingers [or wherever else you place it] extremely dry and you'll often see flakes of skin coming off 3-4 days after you've put it on). So, in order to save myself time, I'm making a post of 'FYI' or common questions that people often ask me. QUESTION #1: What color is your henna? Do you use black henna? My henna is completely natural with no added chemicals, and on most people will be a dark brown. On some people (like my self), henna tends to turn a dark brown-black. There are no adverse reactions to your skin when using natural henna; it's safe to use even on toddlers! The color of the henna stain depends on four things: 1. Your own body chemistry with henna, 2. How fresh the henna powder is, 3. Where on the body you put the henna, and 4. TIME. 1. Your own body chemistry -- means that everyone tends to get a slightly different stain. This really depends on how cold/warm your body is because the warmer your body, the better the henna color. 2. How fresh the henna powder is -- Doesn't matter what else you put in the henna, if the henna powder (which is made from the ground up leaves of the henna plant) is old, then you're color will be a light orange. I'm one of the handful of artists in this area who get fresh henna delivered from overseas on a regular basis. In fact, I've got the Summer 2009 crop of fresh henna right now and it's working beautifully! 3. Where on the body you get the henna -- this is the largest factor in your final stain. The henna stain will always be darkest (dark brown/black) on the palms and tops of your hands, and the same goes for feet. On your lower arms, it is very dark but not so much on the upper arm; legs work the same way. You'll get a brown color on your belly and very light on your back. Please remember, this is in general; some people do tend to get great color even on their back, bellies, and legs! 4. TIME -- If you are getting henna done for an event, it should always be applied two nights before the event (not the night before). So, for example, if you're party/event is on Saturday night, then you need to plan your henna session for Thursday night. This is because the henna stain is bright/deep orange immediately after you take the henna paste off and deepens to a dark brown/black about 24 hours after you've removed the paste. Finally, the henna paste should be kept on for a minimum of 6 hours; 8 hours is best if you want to get the darkest stain. This is why I recommend applying henna at night because then you can simply sleep with it overnight (it does not stain sheets or anything once its dry). QUESTION #2: Do you do henna for groups? [Parties, b-days, sangeets, mhendis, festivals, corporate events, open houses, student org. events, etc] Yes, of course I do henna for groups! I've done henna sessions that consist of 1 person (individual session or bridal client) to events with over 1000 people present (University open houses, bazaars, festivals) and everything in between. If you are looking to hire a henna artist for a private event (ie, not open to the public), such as a Sangeet or mhendi party, birthday party, bat mitzvah, bridal shower, corporate event, etc., then it is best to limit your party to 20-30 guests. This allows me to give everyone 1-2 medium style henna designs in about 4 hours; the smaller the number of guests, the less time that you need to hire me for, and the less you have to pay. [If you will have more than 20-30 guests then you probably want to hire at least 2 henna artists to give everyone a design in a timely fashion.] For group events, I charge an hourly rate (please email hennacraze@gmail.com for further inquest). If you are sure of hiring me for a specific number of hours, then I will note down the exact time I arrive, and the exact time I stop henna-ing, and we'll figure out the price accordingly at the end. It is to your advantage to place someone in charge of organizing a loose line or list so that I am not sitting around dawdling for five minutes in between people (remember, you're paying me by the hour). It is also advisable that you tell me to arrive at a time when you think all the guests will be ready to get their henna (ie, when everyone is done eating/dancing/etc), again, because you are paying me by the hour. (If you give me a time for 7 pm and your guests do not arrive until 7:30pm, I will still have to charge you for that half hour, which I don't want to do!) QUESTION #3: How long does it take for you to apply a henna design? For Party henna (for example, mehndi party, sangeet party, bridal showers, etc): Light henna: About 2 minutes or less (per design) Medium henna: About 5 minutes or less (per design) Large henna: About 10 minutes or less (per design) Bridal henna times are completely different because bridal henna includes both sides of hands and arms, and both feet. Also, bridal henna is usually much more intricate (though not always), but I'll discuss this in the bridal package. QUESTION #4: Do you do henna for individuals? Yes, I do individual sessions! Please remember to contact me at least 5-7 days in advance. QUESTION #5: I'm getting married soon and would like you to do henna for me. What do I do? Contact me at least 3-4 weeks in advance of your wedding (hennacraze@gmail.com). For bridal clients, I always hold a bridal consultation in which we decide the style of henna that you'll get for your wedding. Ideally, this should be done at least 2 weeks before your wedding. We will also finalize a price at this point from one of my 'bridal packages.' QUESTION #6: Bridal package? What is that? Bridal packages are for brides (but you'd figured that out already, right?). Instead of figuring out how much each side of each hand or foot is going to cost you, there's a 'package' which includes your hands, arms, and feet henna. My packages go anywhere from light bridal henna to very intricate bridal henna, to custom henna for your wedding. Bridal packages are ideal if you are going to be getting henna done on hands and feet, or will be getting a lot of henna done on just the hands or just the feet. QUESTION #7: Will you do 'light' style henna for brides? Do I have to pay the 'bridal package' if I want only the light style henna? Yes, of course I do light henna for brides! And no, you will not be charged from the bridal package if you want light henna! Remember, light henna would then consist of 'light style henna' on just your hands or just your feet, or elsewhere. For that, we'll figure out a separate price, and this will be done in the bridal consultation . QUESTION #8: What is a 'bridal consultation'? I always hold a bridal consultation (free of charge) for all my bridal clients; the goal of a consultation is to have a henna design chosen for your wedding. You are welcome to bring your dress, or any other designs or ideas you'd like me to incorporate into your henna (for example, perhaps your dress has a paisley or flower motif? Yes, I can place that into your henna!). Ideally, this should be done at least two weeks before your wedding (believe me, you want to get this out of the way before it starts to get really crazy!). QUESTION #9: Do you charge a travel fee? Yes, I do charge a travel fee if I am coming to your location for a party/event or for your bridal henna. Especially for bridal henna, I request that you come to my location to get it done, but if this is not possible, then a travel fee will be charged. Travel fees are: $0.50/per mile [from Ypsilanti, MI] Travel fees are not charged if I am coming to a location within Ypsilanti, MI. I will add more questions as I remember them. Calligraphy henna... why not?

Just did a great henna gig last night for a group of friends; totally relaxing and so much fun! Because of it, I really want to learn some basic arabic calligraphy so I can henna in that style too! How cool would it be to incorporate something from [above] into a henna design? It's almost got a tribal feel to it... I'm also feeling the weight of 100+ henna photos that need to be uploaded on flickr (or more?). Will do so soon. In the meantime, I'm busy with loads of school work (which I swear, would be so easy if it wasn't for my constant procrastination and some unfortunate events). Wedding Event - August 2009

I've finally gotten around to uploading (read:gathering) the photos floating around from an event I did back in August this year. I hennaed the bride, her family and and her in-laws, and attended the wedding in North Carolina. =) It was great meeting the families, and seeing the wonderful diversity in the wedding ceremony and the couple (between them, the couple has Pakistani, White, & Armeninan [Lebanese and Palestinian] roots)! I also got to hang out with old friends, made some new ones, and overall...ate, A LOT of really good Pakistani/Indian and Chinese food. Yum!

Welcome to the official blog of Henna Craze or Sumeyya R, a henna artist working in and around the Metro-Detroit Michigan area! The main reason why I started this blog is because, frankly, I'm TIRED of uploading pics here and there and everywhere. I'm thinking what I'll try is simply to update stuff about 'my henna world' here; ie, pictures, upcoming events, new projects, random ramblings, etc. This will (hopefully!) save me a bunch of time and energy and make it slightly more effecient to upload stuff. This also saves me the hassle of adding 'copyright' marks on all my photos (which is annoying and time consuming, but apparently necessary) because I'll simply upload on flickr and place a link here (flickr copyrights pictures automatically).
